Students from Great Neck South High School recently paid a visit to the Great Neck Water Pollution Control District to get a detailed look at operations.
Two AP environmental science classes toured the facility with their teacher, Andrew Tuomey. The students were educated on facts about the district, including an up close observion of the GNWPCD’s biofuel station and equipment.
Great Neck Water Pollution Control District Superintendent Christopher Murphy said GNWPCD is committed to educating young people about technology and encouraging them to take a greater interest in the behind-the-scenes infrastructure that supports their health and our local ecosystem.

“We always enjoy doing these informational tours for students, especially when they come from within our own community” said Murphy, in a press release.
Murphy guided the visitors through the wastewater treatment process and equipment on-site, including the ultraviolet disinfection system and recently completed oxidation ditch that will decrease the GNWPCD’s environmental impact. Prior to the tours, he delivered a presentation that provided background information and explained the day-to-day operations of the facility. The superintendent also updated the groups on the district’s on-going upgrade construction project.
