GREAT NECK, NY — For years, Robert Zimmerman has been connected to politics, from his activism to his work with former congressman Gary Ackerman.

Now, Zimmerman hopes to take his first elected position, as Democrat for the 3rd Congressional District, succeeding Tom Suozzi.

Zimmerman also has run a marketing and communications business for more than 30 years.

"Every cause that I believe in is on the line," Zimmerman, a guest on Wednesday's "Patch AM," said. "The principles that got into political activism. The principles that got me in my community work throughout this district are under assault."

Zimmerman expects the race against his Republican opponent George Santos to remain tight. A recent poll has the challengers in a virtual dead heat.

The Democrat said he is willing to work with lawmakers across the aisle to address issues, but he sees a "dramatic difference" between him and Santos.

For example, Zimmerman cited Santos calling for a national abortion ban with no exceptions and pointed to his support of Donald Trump after the Jan. 6 speech.

"Where every other Republican condemned Donald Trump for a speech that incited riots, George Santos defended [his] speech," Zimmerman said.
