2 More LI High Schools Change Team Names After Native American Mascot Ban: Report

Thunderbirds and Warriors are the outgoing team names, according to a report.

LONG ISLAND, NY — Half Hollow Hills High School East and Comsewogue High School are changing their team names in response to New York state'sNative American mascot ban, Newsday reported.

Half Hollow Hills East will switch from the Thunderbirds to the Red Hawks this fall, while Comsewogue will switch to the Spartans after playing one more year as the Warriors, Newsday reported.

The state Board of Regents reportedly voted to unanimously ban schools from using Native American mascots, team names and logos last year.

The Massapequa School District voted last summer to comply with state's Native American mascot ban while it works on any legal challenge to maintain the "Chief" name and/or logo.

Members of the Shinnecock Nation previously told Patch the decision is an important step in healing wounds that have run deep for generations. Lance Gumbs, tribal ambassador and vice president for the National Congress of American Indian for the Northeast Region, said he is actively working on the changes with several school districts.
