DIX HILLS, NY — The Half Hollow Hills School District is considering adding an armed security guard outside each of its buildings during school hours, Superintendent Patrick Harrigan told the community in a letter obtained by Patch.

An armed guard would remain in an unmarked vehicle and would only enter a school if there was an armed intruder, Harrigan said. He said the school district prioritizes the safety and well-being of students, staff and the community.

"We understand that this topic raises important questions and concerns, and we believe it is crucial to gather input from our parents and staff members," Harrigan said.

A survey was pitched to community stakeholders, who will have until 4 p.m. Friday to complete it.

"We appreciate your time and effort in participating, as this information will be instrumental in our decision-making process," Harrigan wrote.
