7 Buildings Evacuated After Gas Main Struck In Manhattan: FDNY

A high-pressure natural gas main was struck in Morningside Heights on Wednesday morning.

MORNINGSIDE HEIGHTS, NY — A high-pressure natural gas main was struck near West 122nd Street and Broadway just before 11 a.m. on Wednesday, leading to evacuations and train delays while emergency responders worked to cap the leak, New York City Fire Department officials said.

According to the FDNY, Con Edison was working to shut down the leak in front of 3081 Broadway and 78 firefighters and emergency workers were on site conducting evacuations.

As of 2 p.m., the FDNY did not have a headcount of how many people were evacuated from the nearby area, but said seven buildings were evacuated.

"Our units responded in approximately five minutes and found a high pressure gas leak in a 20 inch main that was fractured by an excavation procedure that was going on on Broadway," FDNY Assistant Chief of Operations John Sarrocco said.

The New York City Department of Emergency Management said that "residents may notice a gas odor and an increased amount of emergency personnel in the area."

If you smell gas, call 911, emergency officials said.

No injuries were reported, FDNY officials said.
