HARLEM, NY — A man has died weeks after he crashed his dirt bike into a pedestrian at a Harlem intersection, police said Tuesday.

Jermaine Capers, 37, died at a hospital on Monday — more than three weeks after the July 17 crash in Central Harlem, police said.

Capers was riding a dirt bike along Frederick Douglass Boulevard shortly before 5 p.m., according to police. As he approached the intersection of West 116th Street, Capers crashed into an 18-year-old woman who was trying to cross the avenue within the crosswalk, police said.

Both Capers and the woman were disobeying traffic signals at the time of the crash, police said. Police did not say what direction Capers had been riding in.

The woman was knocked to the ground and suffered minor injuries, while Capers was ejected from his bike, authorities said. Police say they found Capers lying on the street with head injuries.

Capers was rushed to Mount Sinai Saint Luke's Hospital, where he remained until his death, police said. He lived at the NYCHA Wagner Houses in East Harlem, according to authorities.

A total of 52 people have been injured in crashes at the same Harlem intersection since 2012 — including 25 drivers, 18 pedestrians and nine cyclists, according to city data.

Correction: Police initially identified the avenue as Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Boulevard, but also stated that the crash happened on Eighth Avenue, which is known as Frederick Douglass Boulevard. City crash data identifies the location as Eighth Avenue, and this article has been updated accordingly.
