Teen Killed In East Harlem Shooting, Police Say
The 17-year-old was shot in the courtyard of the Washington Houses NYCHA development.
EAST HARLEM, NY — A teenager was shot and killed Monday night in the courtyard of an East Harlem public housing development, police say.
Lamar Gibson, 17, was shot in the head at the Washington Houses near East 102nd Street and Third Avenue shortly before midnight on Monday, police said. Gibson was rushed to Metropolitan Hospital where he was pronounced dead, an NYPD spokesman said.
Police did not provide information about any suspects or the events leading up to Gibson's death. The NYPD's investigation into the killing is ongoing, and no arrests have been made, a department spokesman said.

New York City is experiencing a rise in shootings this summer, according to statistics reported by the NYPD. The NYPD recorded 585 shootings with 717 victims as of July 5, compared to 381 shootings with 439 victims at the same point in 2019.
Mayor Bill de Blasio recently announced a new initiative to stem the rise of gun violence in Harlem. The city plans to increase police presence in the neighborhood and engage community and faith groups as violence interrupters.
