For the first time in school history all 10 winter varsity interscholastic sports teams fielded by the Harrison Central School District have earned “Scholar-Athlete” awards by having team grade point averages (GPAs) of 90 percent or higher.
The Scholar-Athlete Program, sponsored by New York State Public High School Athletic Association(NYSPHSAA), requires that a specific number of varsity athletes achieve a grade point average of 90 or above. For example, the number of varsity athletes whose GPA must be 90 percent or higher is 12 for indoor track, but only seven for girls and boys basketball.

“Throughout the past three years we have seen a steady increase in the number of teams and athletes who qualify for this prestigious award," said Athletic Director Pat Seligman. "Last year, 23 out of 29 varsity teams received this award. To have all 10 winter varsity teams qualify for scholar-athlete status is an amazing accomplishment and we couldn’t be prouder of our student-athletes who perform on the field and in the classroom.”
“As a team, we had fallen short of reaching this goal for the past few years," said Head Wrestling Coach Vinnie Nicita. "We had decided that this was one of our team goals heading into this season. Through time management, extra-help in the classroom and a commitment from each team member to do the best they possibly could in their academics, this became a reality. I am so very proud of my wrestling scholar-athletes.”
