Harrison High School’s Foreign Language Honor Society inducted 145 members in its annual ceremony on Wednesday.
Students of French, Italian, Spanish and Latin were recognized for outstanding efforts and performance in the International Baccalaureate year 1 (formerly level IV) and year V/AP.

Several students were honored with induction for achievement in more than one language.
- 8 students were inducted into the French Chapter
- 25 students were inducted into the Italian Chapter
- 15 students were inducted into the Latin Chapter
- 97 students were inducted into the Spanish Chapter
“These are the languages heard in the halls of Harrison High School,” said Brendan Gallivan, Director of LOTE (Languages Other than English)/ESL (English as a Second Language). “Students realize they are not just studying a language but are seeing their peers and themselves from other perspectives.”

Gallivan also said Foreign Language study provides high school students with an international perspective on culture, customs, traditions and world events. The evening featured candle lighting by students and faculty and the ceremonial recitation of the oaths of each language, student reflections and musical performances.
“In today’s world, study of languages other than English is no longer the exception, it is the expectation,” Gallivan said.
