Marcus, the area’s leading expert in female sexuality, conducted her research for her PhD dissertation. She studied local women who used vibrators as part of their sexual dysfunction treatment to measure patient concerns.

“We have found vibrators to be an extremely effective aspect of treatment for certain sexual dysfunctions,” said Marcus. “To be effective, we really need to understand patients’ reactions to the treatment.”

Through her research, Marcus discovered that six recurring themes emerged from her interviews with patients. Patients were concerned with change in orgasmic patterns, fear of using an outside, “unnatural” object, dependency, entitlement, reaction of partners, and changes in sexual attitude. Marcus concluded that for vibrators to serve as effective tools, clinicians who recommend their use need to address the above concerns to ease a patient’s worries and encourage compliance.

Bat Sheva Marcus, LMSW, MPH, PhD, clinical director of The Medical Center for Female Sexuality, is a licensed social worker with a master’s degree in public health and a doctorate in human sexuality. Along with her colleagues at the Center, Marcus assesses the physical and psychological causes of a woman’s sexual issues. She and her team use this integrated approach to diagnose and treat hundreds of women seeking to improve their sexual experience.

The Journal of Sexual Medicine is the official Journal of the International Society for Sexual Medicine. It is the most widely read and cited publication in the field of sexual medicine. As of 2007, the ISI Journal Citation Reports ranks The Journal of Sexual Medicine as the number 2 journal out of all 55 journals in urology and nephrology, with an impact factor of 6.199.

The Medical Center for Female Sexuality is one of the only sexual treatment centers on the country to integrate a medical and psychological treatment modality.  A medical and psychological team works to evaluate the issues that might be of concern to the patient.  Since the MCFS is a medical practice, the treatments are generally covered by most insurance companies.  The MCFS can be found on the Internet at www.centerforfemalesexuality.com.
