HYC Picks Calder Vella as Youth Employment Coordinator

The announces the appointment of Lisa Calder Vella, M.A. as the new coordinator of the Youth Employment Service (YES) program.

Lisa comes with extensive experience working with students in public and private school settings. She was employed by the New York City Board of Education and was then recruited by the Smith School, a private school also located in Manhattan. Prior to working in school settings, Lisa was the acting assistant director of Dynamite Youth Center, a substance abuse program where she worked with at risk teenagers. Lisa did individual, group, and family counseling, along with conducting employment workshops and various relevant seminars to aid in preparing the members to become productive and responsible young adults in their community. Lisa is a NYS certified school counselor.

The YES program is a job referral and coaching program that helps connect Harrison adolescents with paid employment and internship opportunities. YES also provides job prep skills, such as preparing for interviews and resume writing.

Lisa is already actively meeting with students in the Library. Her hours at the library are generally Mondays 11 to 2:30 p.m. and Wednesdays 10 to 1:30 p.m. She also meets with students after school at her office at the Harrison Youth Council located on 84 Calvert Street on Thursday afternoons.
