Class of '12 Leaves as a 'United Community'

There will be many memories of the Harrison class of 2012, but if there is one thing that sticks out it was their ability to work together.

That unique combination of teamwork and skill was celebrated as the class graduated Friday evening in front of about 1,600 friends, family and school faculty at the SUNY Purchase Performing Arts Center.

The theme of this year's Harrison High School yearbook was "A United Community", and as awards, scholarships and individual achievements piled up between the 256 graduates, that idea was never forgotten.

"I can absolutely say the relationships made at Harrison High School made me the person I am today," explained Daniel Cuneo, the a class speaker selected by this year's 13 Summa Cum Laude graduates.

Cuneo was chosen by the group of students as someone who represents the diverse class. The task was handed to the Summa Cum Laude students earlier this spring. Cuneo explained that the relationships formed among his peers was part of what made them special as a group.

"I've developed enough relationships with these wonderful people that I can honestly say they are a part of my extended family," he said.

Four-time class president Christie Nannariello explained that the last four years spent together have prepared the graduates for their next challenges.

"It prepared us for the real world ahead, and it also allowed us the opportunity to appreciate the diversity the school has to offer," she said, noting the different backgrounds, races and personalities that make up the class of 2012. "Though 15 miles may separate us, we bonded together."

That was one of the special things about the class of 2012 noted by Superintendent Louis Wool, who said the class' genuine concern for one another and their teamwork over the last four years made the class one that will be remembered.

"What makes this class so incredible is they find space for everyone's uniqueness," he said.

The class of 2012 graduates with the most AP scholars of any in Harrison history. It is a group that displayed talent in the arts, classroom, athletic fields and other places over the last four years.

Principal James Ruck wished the class luck as they apply those skills in the future.

"I wish you good health, good luck, good wishes and good skill as you head along this journey called life," he said. "I love you all."

As the group moves on to life after high school Emma Adler, a Summa Cum Laude graduate selected by the high school staff to speak, challenged her peers to make the most of the opportunities in front of them.

"Do not be afraid to make your life extraordinary because we only get one shot at this," she said. "Get out there and show the world what we can do."
