A married mother of two, James has become a household name as the popularity of her novels has skyrocketed. The novels, set in Seattle, WA, follow the relationship between a recent college graduate and young businessman Christian Grey. The novels include themes of bondage and sexual domination.
James told the audience her initial goals for "Fifty Shades" were small. Originally only available on e-readers, she said she wanted to see paperback copies of her book available on store shelves. A few millions book sales later, she has her wish.
The light-hearted 30-minute question and answer period provided fans with the opportunity to discuss everything from a recent Saturday Night Live spoof—James called it "very funny"—to how she adjusts to every day life after authoring a steamy romance novel.
"It's very easy, I turn around and look at my living room and it’s a mess and I have to do laundry," she said to a round of laughter. "I don't have any difficulty distinguishing between the two."
The author also clarified that there is no hidden meaning behind the "E.L." in her pen name, saying her first name is Erika and there is no significant meaning to the "L".
James, who doesn't often make public appearances, also signed books for fans at the event.
About 250 fans—almost all women—shelled out $85 to see the author first hand, including Diane Costallos and Amanda Carlin, former New Yorkers who made the drive Friday from Connecticut.
Both huge fans of the book, the women said they jumped at the chance to find out more about "Fifty Shades".
"He's definitely worth it," said Carlin, referencing Grey, the main character in the trilogy.
"I don't have time to read with three kids—I read these books, I made time," said Costallos. "It's captivating, it just keeps you reading and wanting more."
