Rollover Accident Closes Part of Halstead Ave. (VIDEO)

The four-car accident happened just before 4 p.m.

A four-car accident in the heart of Harrison's downtown closed part of Halstead Avenue for a little more than an hour Tuesday afternoon.

The accident left a white Mercedes on its side and three other vehicles damaged in front of the shopping center at 340 Halstead Avenue. Police believe the Mercedes pulled out of an on-street parking spot onto the road and hit the right side of a gray Toyota just before 4 p.m.

Based on the marks on the vehicles, police believe the Mercedes drove onto the side of the Toyota and was tipped over during the impact. The Harrison Fire Department removed the driver of the Mercedes through a window, but she wasn't hurt.

None of the other drivers were injured.

"She had enough (speed) to go up on the car and tilt it," said Harrison Police Lieutenant Edward Lucas, who said police are still working out the details of what happened.

A white box truck that was in front of the Toyota was rear-ended during the accident and a black Honda behind the Toyota had its front bumper knocked off. Police believe the other three vehicles were either moving slowly or stopped at a traffic light when the accident took place.

Lucas said he doesn't expect anyone to be ticketed.

Traffic was closed in the area while police, fire and EMS workers responded to the scene.

A large crowd gathered outside of the popular downtown shopping center to survey the damage. Many commented that the road isn't a likely place for a rollover accident.

The scene was cleared and road opened by about 5:15 p.m.
