Fire Hydrant Flushing to Begin Monday

Westchester Joint Water Works officials will begin flushing fire hydrants in West Harrison Monday, before moving to Purchase, Harrison, Rye and New Rochelle.

Don't be alarmed if your tap water has an odd color to it at some point during the next few weeks.

The Westchester Joint Water Works (WJWW) will be conducting routine flushing of fire hydrants over the next three weeks, starting in West Harrison on Monday. The flushing, done periodically to maintain water quality and make sure that the hydrants are receiving enough water pressure in the event of a fire, can sometimes cause temporary water discoloration.

Although the water is safe to drink, the WJWW recommends running cold water on the lowest level of the home for a few minutes until the water returns to normal. Do not run your laundry while experiencing discolored water because it may cause sediment to accumulate in your hot water system or discolor color your clothes.
