1. Another candidate launched their campaign last weekend against incumbent State Senator Brian Kavanagh. Vittoria Fariello, a Lower Manhattan district leader, is a social services lawyer and community activist. The senate district includes large parts of Lower Manhattan as well as brownstone Brooklyn (Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO, and Carrol Gardens). (ebroadsheet.com)

3. Brooklyn's urban forest has grown at a significantly higher rate than other boroughs, according to the finding from a recent report by The Nature Conservancy. The neighborhoods with the greatest tree coverage tend to surround Prospect Park and Green-Wood Cemetery; the report also singles out a neighborhood organization in Gowanus dedicated to caring for 130 trees.
