Brooklyn Bridge Suicidal Man Afraid Of Being Deported: Cops

The Belgian man was frightened of being deported back to his country after coming to the U.S. on a tourist visa, officials said.

BROOKLYN BRIDGE, NY — A man who said he was scared of being deported from the United States was talked off a beam on the Brooklyn Bridge early Sunday morning after he said he was going to jump to his death, law enforcement sources said.

Two cops found two bags with clothes and personal items on the Brooklyn Bridge a little after midnight, officials told the New York Daily News. They found the man standing on a beam over the highway as they were looking for the owner of the unattended bags, they said. Then they climbed the bridge's cables and convinced the man to climb down off the beam, according to the Daily News.

The man, who was Belgian, was taken to Bellevue Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. According to the New York Post, he told cops he had come to the U.S. on a tourist visa.
