Woman Buys Pricey Purses With Brooklyn Straphanger's Card: Police

The fashionable thief used the stolen credit card to spend more than $5,000 on handbags earlier this month, police say.

DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN, NY — Cops are looking to bag a woman who bought two high-end purses after a straphanger's credit card went missing in Downtown Brooklyn earlier this month.

The unfortunate rider, a 57-year-old woman, noticed her wallet was gone from her purse around 6:30 p.m. Sept. 1 while aboard a southbound 2 train at the Borough Hall station, the NYPD said.

The unidentified fashionable thief used the woman's stolen credit card to make two expensive purchases in Manhattan less than an hour later, police said.

She first paid more than $2,300 for an Yves Saint Laurent handbag around 7:10 p.m. at the label's eponymous Midtown store, police said.

Less than 10 minutes later, she bought a "Bb" bag for more than $2,700 at Barneys' flagship Madison Avenue store, where she was caught on surveillance video, according to police.

The woman tried to buy $400 worth of Gap gift cards about an hour later, but the purchase was declined, the NYPD said.

The woman is described as a black woman standing 5-foot-6. She was last seen wearing a white tank top, a gray fanny pack and a pink denim jacket with "Kiss" patches on the front and a similar logo across the back, police said.
