Walt Whitman HS Girls Basketball Team Wins Suffolk Class AA Title

The win marked the varsity team's first county title in program history. The team will compete for the Suffolk overall final on Saturday.

SOUTH HUNTINGTON, NY — The Walt Whitman High School girls varsity basketball team won the Suffolk Class AA final at Stony Brook’s Island Federal Arena on Feb. 25, marking the team's first county title in program history, the South Huntington School District announced.

The Wildcats defeated Northport 48-44 in a come-from-behind victory.

South Huntington fell behind 11-0 to start the game, but the Wildcats picked things up in the second half. Iris Hoffman hit a three-pointer to give the team its first lead of the match-up. The girls stayed ahead for the remainder of the game.

The team has a 20-3 record, setting a Wildcats record for most wins in a season. But the job isn't done yet.

Walt Whitman HS advances to play the winner of the Massapequa/Baldwin game in the Long Island Class AA Championship/Southeast Regional Final at Farmingdale State at 1 p.m. March 11.

Before that, the Wildcats are up against the winner of the Port Jefferson/Shoreham-Wading River game in the Suffolk overall final at Stony Brook’s Island Federal Arena at noon on Saturday.

The district congratulated Iris Hoffman, Kasey Wagner, Kathleen O'Mara, Emma Creighton, Brianna Verga, Shaelyn Scharpf, Kallie Eichner, Grace Davis, Courtney Magee and Paige Hiller.
