1 Dead After Boat Crashes, Overturns In Great South Bay: Police

The boat crashed into a dock on an island in the Great South Bay, police say.

ISLIP, NY — A person is dead after a boat overturned and crashed near a house on a South Shore island on Thursday, Suffolk County Police said.

At about 7:35 a.m., a 47-year-old West Babylon called 911 to report he and another man were aboard a 30-foot Wellcraft center console boat when the boat ran aground, struck a house and overturned on West Fire Island.

The West Babylon man was taken to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said. The second man, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

It is not clear which man was operating the boat at the time of the crash.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on this crash to call the Third Squad at 631-854-8352.
