'Life Threatening' Rip Current Warning Issued For LI: Weekend Weather

High rip currents are expected on Long Island's South Shore on Thursday, the National Weather Service said.

LONG ISLAND, NY — The National Weather Service warns of high rip currents on the South Shore on Thursday, encouraging residents to be cautious.

The "life-threatening" rip currents are likely for all people entering the surf zone, the service said.

"Anyone visiting the beaches should stay out of the surf," the service said. "Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water."

The hazardous weather outlook is issued until Thursday evening, and also effects Brooklyn and Southern Queens.

Friday's 70 percent chance of precipitation will continue through Saturday and Sunday, with 60 percent chance of precipitation.

Here's the weekend forecast from the National Weather Service:

Friday: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Cloudy, with a high near 75. South wind 7 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Friday Night: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Cloudy, with a low around 66. South wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Saturday: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Cloudy, with a high near 77. South wind 10 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent.

Saturday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 64. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent.

Sunday: A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 79. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent.

Sunday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 65. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent.

Monday: A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 79. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent.
