Man ID'D In Fatal Great South Bay Boat Crash: Police

The man was killed after the boat overturned and crashed into a South Shore island, police say.

WEST FIRE ISLAND, NY — The man who was killed after a boat overturned and crashed near a house on a South Shore island on Thursday has been identified, Suffolk County Police said.

Phillip Sanzano, 47, of Bellport, was pronounced dead after the 30-foot Wellcraft center console boat he was aboard ran aground, struck a house and overturned on West Fire Island at about 7:35 a.m.

Christopher Cannella, 47, of West Babylon, the boat's other occupant, called 911 to report the crash. He was taken to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Sanzano was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Detectives are asking anyone with information on this crash to call the Third Squad at 631-854-8352.
