LONG ISLAND, NY — A Nor'easter is expected to bring heavy rain, strong winds and possibly snow to Long Island from Monday afternoon through Tuesday, according to National Weather Service forecasters.

Rainfall and gusts of winds as high as 25 mph for most of Monday. The rain is expected to turn into about an inch of snow Tuesday.

The rain will lighten up Wednesday, and sunny skies will show Thursday, with a high temperature around 50 degrees.

The significant winter storm will impact much of the Eastern US, especially the Northeast, starting Monday and continuing into Wednesday.

Rain will continue to hold off on, St. Patrick's Day and will remain mostly cloudy, with a high near 51.

Monday: Rain. High near 43. East wind 11 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Monday Night: Rain. Low around 37. Breezy, with an east wind 16 to 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.

Tuesday: Rain. Temperature falling to around 35 by 2pm. Wind chill values between 25 and 30. Breezy, with a northwest wind 16 to 23 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Tuesday Night: Rain, possibly mixed with snow, mainly before 2am. Low around 32. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. Windy, with a northwest wind 23 to 29 mph, with gusts as high as 41 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80 percent. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

Wednesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 44. Windy, with a northwest wind 26 to 28 mph, with gusts as high as 43 mph.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 31. Blustery.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 50.

Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 38.

Friday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 51.
