Crimes Nearby, Pt. II: Attempted Granny Scams, Students Followed Home
A look at recent crime in the area.

The following information is taken directly from the Nassau County Police Department's incident reports. None of the defendants have been convicted of a crime.
Massapequa
- The window of a vehicle parked at the North Massapequa Post Office on Hicksville Road was found broken on April 12 with a backpack containing an iPad stolen.
- A North Massapequa resident on North Pine Drive was targeted in a “granny scam” on April 13 and gave $5,700 to the suspect. For more details, click here.
- An unknown suspect broke the passenger window of a vehicle parked on Clocks Boulevard on April 13 and stole the navigation display, tires, rims and side view mirrors. Unqua Elementary School was evacuated on the morning of April 16 after a threatening message was received. For more details, click here.
Bellmore
- On April 10, a woman on Bell Court was targeted in a “granny scam” on and gave $1,000 to the suspect. For more details, click here.
- A North Bellmore man was arrested on April 18 and charged with assault and drug possession. For more details, click here.
- Two students were followed by a green four-door sedan while they walked home from Merrick Avenue Middle School on April 16, according to Principal Meador Pratt. For more details, click here.
Merrick
- Derek Cantamessa, 41, of Rockville Centre was arrested on April 11 at the intersection of Merrick Road and Henry Street and charged with driving while intoxicated as well as one vehicle and traffic law violation.
- Two students were followed by a green four-door sedan while they walked home from Merrick Avenue Middle School on April 16, according to Principal Meador Pratt. For more on this, click here.

- On April 11, Gene Maloney, 42 of Forest Hills was on Route 135 in Seaford and charged with second and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle as well as two vehicle and traffic law violations.
