LEVITTOWN, NY — Family, friends and coworkers gathered Monday to say farewell to a former Levittown fire captain and NYPD sergeant who died last week of a 9/11-related illness. Scott "Brutus" Johnston, of Levittown, was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma nearly two years ago, the state's Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 69 said in a Facebook post. He died Thursday at age 50.

Johnston, a devoted husband and father of seven daughters, was a member of the fire department for more than three decades and remained an active member until his death. He served as captain of Ladder 6.
