Levittown Resident Makes TV Debut Thursday on ‘The Killer Speaks’

Retired NYPD detective sergeant is a consultant on the crime documentary, which airs its third episode Thursday night at 10 p.m.

A&E needed an expert crime consultant for their new documentary series, someone with extensive experience investigating murder cases. A Levittown resident has gotten the part.

Joseph L. Giacalone, a retired NYPD Detective Sergeant and current adjunct professor at John Jay College, will be appearing on the show “The Killer Speaks” Thursday night at 10 p.m.

Giacalone, 43, who has worked on hundreds of murder cases, is a crime scene and investigative consultant for the show, which aims to give viewers a “journey trough the minds of killers,” as they describe their crimes step-by-step.

“My job is to help viewers understand how police go through all the info,” said Giacalone, who graduated from St. Anthony’s HS and if a lifelong Levittown resident. “What you expect to see in the real world, instead of what you see on CSI Miami.”

The one-hour episode that airs Thursday focuses on convicted felon Maksim Gelman, who was responsible for a 28-hour killing spree in NYC back in February of 2011. Gelman stabbed and killed four people, injuring at least five others, Giacalone said.

Giacalone was chosen after A&E reached out to John Jay in their search for consultants. He is the author of the textbook “The Criminal Investigative Function,” which is used in colleges and police departments across the country, and appears frequently on the radio.

“This is a big step for me,” he said. “ I would like to do more TV appearances and possibly end up as a commentator.”
