Levittown Student to Attend Simons Research Program
Junior at Division HS accepted into prestigious program.

Savvas Papadopoulos, a junior at Levittown’s Division Avenue High School, has been accepted to the prestigious Stony Brook Simons Summer Research Program. He will attend Stony Brook University for a six-week summer program to conduct college-level research in hopeful preparation for an Intel submission next year.
Savvas was selected based on his strong academic record, the quality of his application and teacher recommendations. Those selected to attend the Simons research program include the nation’s top science students. Savvas will work with Dr. Holly Colognato in Stony Brook’s Department of Pharmacological Sciences with a focus on glial cells, which help renew the myelin sheath that protects neurons.
Savvas is a member of the National Honor Society, student council, Science Olympiad, Robotics Club and School Development Committee. Within the Division Avenue Science Research Program, he has studied the effectiveness of ionized water as an institutional cleaner.
“This opportunity will help me formulate a decision on which path to follow in future studies,” Savvas stated. “I have always favored research and, in particular, developments in the field of multiple sclerosis.”
Division Avenue High School staff, science research adviser Gerard Marzigliano, science curriculum associate Kevin McDermott and Principal Dr. Francesco Ianni extend their congratulations to Savvas on this extraordinary accomplishment.
