Man Indicted for Beating Dog to Death

The Westbury man could face two years in jail for brutally disciplining his 2-year-old pomeranian, the DA said.

A Westbury man was indicted on charges that he brutally beat and caused the death of his 2-year-old dog in April, according to the Nassau County District Attorney’s office.

Bing Jie Yang, 23, was arraigned Wednesday on one felony count and one misdemeanor animal cruelty charge after he was indicted by a grand jury, the DA said. A judge released him on his own recognizance and ordered Yang, a Chinese national, to surrender his passport, authorities said.

If convicted, Yang faces up to two years in prison, officials said.

On April 7, Yang brought his dog, Dan Dan, to a veterinary hospital for treatment, officials said. When he arrived, Dan Dan “had suffered blunt force trauma about his body and suffered from fractured ribs, a fractured liver and internal bleeding,” according to animal cruelty investigators. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful and he eventually died, the DA said.

Officials believe Dan Dan’s injuries were caused after Yang brutally disciplined him, the DA said.

“This defendant allegedly beat his small Pomeranian so mercilessly that he broke the small dog’s ribs, fractured his liver, and ultimately killed him,” Acting DA Madeline Singas said in a statement. “Crimes against the defenseless, whether animal or human, are among the most heinous. I’m grateful to the Nassau County SPCA for bringing us this case.”

Yang is due back in court July 29.
