During a traditional candlelighting ceremony at Levittown’s Jonas E. Salk Middle School, eight eighth-grade students and 74 seventh-grade students were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society for having displayed outstanding accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership, citizenship and service.
In her opening remarks, society adviser Betty Weiss remarked that the inductees and fellow members are the pride and joy of the school and their families. “You are the leaders in the classroom and the role models for other students,” she said.
Principal John Zampaglione congratulated the parents for having raised exceptional children. To the inductees he stated, “What makes us all proud is not necessarily the honor itself, but how you acquired the honor.”
The evening was punctuated by musical interludes by the Salk Chamber Choir and a processional performed by music teachers Lisa Levenberg and Karen Pace. After the names of the inductees were read and their certificates were handed out, society historian Kerry Redling honored music teacher Linda Plank with the Teacher of the Year Award on behalf of the society.
The evening culminated in the serving of refreshments in the decorated school cafeteria.
