2 Firefighters Hurt After Roof Collapse During North Amityville Warehouse Fire

Firefighters were pulled from the building on Albany Avenue after a partial roof collapse during a two-alarm fire late Thursday night.

NORTH AMITYVILLE, NY — Three people, including two firefighters, were injured after a roof partially collapsed during a two-alarm commercial fire on Albany Avenue late Thursday night, officials said.

The North Amityville Fire Company was dispatched at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Jan. 1 for reports of smoke inside a commercial building at 690 Albany Ave., fire officials said.

First-arriving crews reported smoke showing and transmitted a working commercial fire, requesting mutual aid. Firefighters stretched multiple hose lines into the building as additional crews worked to ventilate the structure, officials said.

While firefighters were operating inside, conditions worsened and the building self-vented through the roof, prompting command to pull all crews out of the structure and switch to exterior operations, officials said.

Firefighters then battled the blaze defensively for a period of time using two tower ladders and multiple hose lines before bringing the fire under control after several hours.

One worker and two firefighters were evaluated at the scene for minor injuries, officials said.

75 firefighters responded, with mutual aid provided by at least eight fire departments from Suffolk and Nassau counties, including North Lindenhurst, East Farmingdale, Copiague, Lindenhurst, West Babylon, Farmingdale, and Massapequa, according to officials on scene.

The Town of Babylon Fire Marshal’s Office and arson investigators are investigating the cause of the fire.
