3 Killed in Tragic 13 Hours in Suffolk

A driver was arrested after a fatal crash. Two pedestrians were also fatally struck, one in a parking lot in a mistaken gas pedal crash.

Three people were killed in three separate crashes in Suffolk County over a 13-hour period, police said.

The first crash occurred in Copiague around 4 p.m. Saturday. According to Suffolk Police, a woman was walking in a parking lot located 870 Merrick Road when she was struck by a 2001 Honda Civic that was backing out of a parking space.

The 59-year-old woman driving the Honda mistakenly stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake, striking the pedestrian before damaging three parked cars, police said. Several people lifted the vehicle off of the woman before emergency service personnel arrived on scene.

The woman, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip by Amityville Fire Department Ambulance where she was pronounced dead. The driver of the vehicle was not injured and no criminal charges have been filed.

The second crash occurred shortly before 2 a.m. Sunday in Commack.

Patrick J. McMahon, 48, was driving a 2018 Infiniti Q60 west on Dovecote Lane, near Dana Lane, when he lost control of the car, striking a driveway pillar and a tree before the car overturned and came to a stop on the front lawn of a home located on Dovecote Lane.

Steven Sarvis, 32, of Ronkonkoma, a passenger in the backseat, was taken to St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown where he was pronounced dead.

McMahon was transported to Huntington Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. A second passenger in the Infiniti self-transported to St. Catherine of Siena with minor injuries.

McMahon, Commack, was charged with DWI and will be arraigned at a later date.

The third crash happened in Patchogue just before 5 a.m. According to police, a 58-year-old East Hampton man was driving a 2016 Ford Explorer south on Route 112, near Taber Avenue, when the SUV struck a 34-year-old Jose Chicas-Diaz, who was crossing the roadway.

Chicas-Diaz, of Patchogue, was taken to Long Island Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead. No criminal charges have been filed.
