Locals Honored at Lindy Republican Club Clam Bake
Carpenter and other local candidates make appearances at annual fundraiser as Lindenhurst residents Kenneth Weckerle and Mike Canobbio recognized.
A community service award, a scholarship presentation and the naming of the person of the year marked this year’s Lindenhurst Republican Club’s .
Club President Doug Madlon kicked off the recent awards ceremony, which also featured appearances by Republican candidates, including , Suffolk County treasurer and candidate for county executive; Ed Blankenhorn, Jr., candidate for Suffolk County Legislator, 14th district; and Tom Gargiulo and Matt Groh, both Council candidates.
Tony Pancella, vice chairman of the Suffolk County Republican Committee, also made an appearance, and introduced when she arrived.

She thanked everyone in attendance for their support, noting that she’ll “be campaigning with your candidates.”
Later that night had the honor of picking the winning ticket of the night’s 50/50 raffle, which was held by a very happy Rosalie Bamundo.

It was one of several raffles that helped raise funds that allow the club to give back to Lindenhurst in the form of scholarships, as well as other items, like a Wii system for the seniors at the .
“It’s more of a fundraiser and a time to have a little fun and get together in the summer,” said Madlon of the club’s event at .
“Last year, we raised about $3,500, so I’m confident we raised about the same this year,” said Joe Barone, sergeant-at-arms.
This year two members of the – and Michael Errico – received scholarships. They were presented by and RJ Renna, of the Chirstina Renna Foundation, Inc.
Rosado will attend George Washington University in the fall while Errico will attend American University.
Village Trustee Mike Lavorata then announced Kenneth Weckerle as the recipient of the 2011 Community Service Award.
Trustee Maryann Weckerle accepted the honor on behalf of her uncle – Lindenhurst resident since 1928, Army veteran with two purple hearts, dock master from 1992 to 2010 and active member of the for more than 60 years.
“He would be very proud of this,” said Weckerle of her uncle, who couldn’t be there that night.
She also accepted a Lindenhurst Village certificate of merit on her uncle’s behalf from Trustee . She also presented the club’s Person of the Year, Lindenhurst High School Varsity Baseball , with one.
“Thank you very much for this honor. I couldn’t have done it without a great team at home, too,” said of both honors.
In 2011 he became the fifth coach in Suffolk County history to win 500 games, and the baseball field will be after him. He’s also coached more than 160 All League players, more than 40 All County players, 10 All State players and 15 Golden Glove winners.
