Man Arrested After Scamming Cash From Elderly Woman In Suffolk: PD

A man from Queens was arrested after scamming a large sum of cash from an elderly woman in Lindenhurst, police say.

LINDENHURST, NY — Suffolk County Police today arrested a man after he attempted to scam an elderly woman in Lindenhurst on Wednesday, police said.

A 77-year-old woman received an alert on her computer indicating that her bank account had been compromised and instructing her to call the number listed on the screen, police said. She called the number and a man convinced her to withdraw cash from her bank account, police said.

The man then picked up over $16,000 in cash from her home on Wednesday around 1:30 p.m., police said.

The victim received another call on Thursday from a man seeking an additional $10,000, police said. She called police and Gurpreet Singh, 29, of Queens, was arrested at her Lindenhurst home around 1:10 p.m. when he came to take the cash, police said.

Singh was charged with third-degree grand larceny and is slated to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Friday, police said.

The investigation is continuing and detectives believe another man took the money from the victim on October 2, police said.
