Record High Temps Set as Spring Roars to Life in Lindy

The National Weather Service says 80 degrees is possible on Tuesday.

You might as well call it what it is - Spring has sprung!

High temperatures soared on Tuesday throughout the day, hitting a high of 76 degrees at Islip around 12 p.m., shattering the previous record of 73 degrees set in 1991.

National Weather Service meteorologists are forecasting Islip to rise as high as 80 degrees on Tuesday.

And as of mid-afternoon on April 9 the temperature read 83 degrees on the Capital One Bank sign at the corner of East Gates and South Wellwood Avenues in Lindenhurst.

The warm temps and sun drew Lindy residents out to the beaches in Babylon Town, like Cedar Beach and Venetian Shores. People also enjoyed the weather down at the Lindenhurst Docks (Charles J. Cowan Marina), which have been opened during the day now.

Records were also broken at Brookhaven National Lab, where temperatures had hit 77 degrees by 12 p.m., breaking a 43-year-old record of 76 degrees.

Winds coming in from the North-Northwest are deflecting the cooler sea breeze, keeping most of Long Island warm and places such as Fire Island and Montauk cooler than the rest of their neighboring villages.

Low humidity is also helping dry out the air and allowing temperatures to rise under mostly sunny skies. Risk for brush fires have increased, according to a special weather statement from the National Weather Service, but no watches or warnings have been issued.

The Spring heat wave won't last long, however. Rain and showers will move in later tonight and throughout the week, dropping the Lindenhurst area back down to the mid-50s by Friday.
