SCPD: Lindenhurst Woman Dies in Fiery Crash

Police say driver lost control of car traveling at a high rate of speed.

A Lindenhurst woman was killed in a fiery single-car crash Friday on Route 109 in West Babylon, according to police.

Police said Angela Gallizzi Avendano, 33, was driving a 2006 Mercedes-Benz at a high rate of speed on Route 109 northbound near the intersection of Golding Avenue when she lost control of the car and struck a parked vehicle. It is not known why she lost control of the vehicle.

According to SCPD’s First Precinct detectives, the Mercedes-Benz caromed off the parked vehicle, knocked down several utility poles, and finally struck the gas pumps at an Ultra gas station.

A fire ensued fully engulfing the vehicle with Avendano inside and setting the gas station on fire, as well, police said.

The West Babylon Fire Department extinguished the fire, but fire department and police personnel were unable to rescue the driver, according to detectives.

Avendano was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

A Facebook page has been set up in Avendano’s memory, and details of her wake and funeral can be found at the Dodge-Thomas Funeral Home website.

According to the website, Avendano will be waked today at 3 p.m. and tonight 7 p.m. at Dodge-Thomas, which is in Glen Cove, and her funeral mass will take place tomorrow at 10 a.m. St. Patrick RC Church in Glen Cove. She will be laid to rest at the Locust Valley Cemetery, according to the website.
