Single Lane in Effect on Fire Island Bridge Till June
Daytime, single travel lane operations on Fire Island Inlet Bridge will remain in effect weekdays till late June as needed repairs to bridge continue, said NYSDOT.
Single-lane, alternating directional travel operations now in effect on the Robert Moses Causeway Fire Island Inlet Bridge will continue until late June 2011 as repairs are being made to the bridge, according to the New York State Department of Transportation.
In a statement on the NYSDOT, southbound motorists are being stopped for a brief period while northbound motorists utilize the single available travel lane. Then northbound motorists are being stopped while southbound motorists proceed. The main channel of the Fire Island Inlet remains opened to mariners.
The single lane operation is in effect Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. The single-lane traffic pattern is needed to perform steel repairs and help assure the safe operation of the nearly 50-year-old Fire Island Inlet Bridge, said the DOT.

Local emergency service providers and officials have been notified of these continued travel restrictions and repair operations.
The DOT reminded motorists to drive carefully through the work zone, obey the posted construction speed limit and the instructions of the flag persons for their safety and the safety of the highway work crew. It also reminded motorists that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone, and in accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver’s license.
