Update: Outages Reported in Lindenhurst as LIPA Hits Peak Record

Outages scattered throughout Lindenhurst and Long Island, but LIPA assures it still has capacity, working to restore power quickly.

Temps topping has resulted in LIPA hitting a new all-time peak load record, and more than 9,000 outages across , and the Far Rockaways – 745 of those reported in and 97 of those reported in Lindenhurst.

However, the power provider has assured that it has the capacity to meet the needs of its 1.1 million customers, and is working to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.

“Currently, we’re at 5,898 megawatts, a new all-time peak record. The previous record was 5,825 on July 6, 2010. But we still have the capacity to meet our customers’ electrical needs,” LIPA spokesperson Vanessa Baird-Streeter told Patch.

, but the power demand ticked up causing the load to increase. That’s why, she said, “customers are still encouraged to conserve energy” to reduce stress on the system and the potential for more or larger power outages.

“Extreme temperatures cause stress on the electric system, which has led to scattered power outages,” a statement on LIPA’s website said. “LIPA crews are working to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.”

LIPA has also indicated that it’ll have extra crews available to address any heat-related outages in “a quick and safe manner.”

However, “the extreme heat can also create hazardous and difficult working conditions for our field crews, which could delay our response times,” the statement noted.

If customers do experience a power outage, they should call 800-490-0075.

“And choose the option to put in a phone number so we can call you back with an estimated restoration time,” Baird-Streeter advised.

Customers can also visit or Storm Center online, where they can see the outages in their area and the estimated restoration times, updated every 15 minutes, she added.

LIPA also offered the following tips to help customers conserve energy and manage electrical costs down during this heat wave and the rest of the summer:

  • Put air conditioners on timers, don't let them run when not at home.
  • Close blinds and drapes.
  • Set air conditioners at 78 degrees.
  • Use fans to circulate cool air, which helps cut air conditioner use.
  • Set refrigerators and freezers at the most efficient temperatures.
  • Run major appliances such as clothes and dishwashers in the morning or late evening to avoid the peak demand hours of 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
