Rockville Centre Public Official Thwarts Car Thief

An administrator for the Village of Rockville Centre thwarted a would-be burglar on his way home from a fireworks show on July 9.

Frank Quigley confronted the male suspect, who was attempting to break into a van in a parking field in Rockville Centre, and the subject fled. Quigley called the police while he chased the subject. Cops searched through several backyards and spotted the subject, who then ran from police.

Gregory P. Schroeder, 40, of Freeport, was arrested and charged with criminal mischief, attempted larceny, possession of burglar tools and criminal possession of a controlled substance. Schroeder is a parolee for burglary.

Cops: Elderly Couple Were Larceny Victims

Police said an elderly couple were victims of an alleged larceny in Lynbrook after a man sought entry into their home under the guise of fixing their roof on July 9.

According to detectives, a Hispanic man knocked on the door of their Peninsula Boulevard home and offered to perform a roof repair for $350. The couple told police they noticed two Hispanic females and a child sitting in the back of a black pick up truck. They agreed to the repair and offered for the people in the car to stay in their home to stay cool, police said.

The victims retrieved $350 from a container in which they keep cash, replaced the lid and placed it in the sink. They paid the man and said they were momentarily distracted when he asked to use the restroom. According to police, when the subjects left the house, the victims noticed the container was on the countertop and the remaining cash was missing.

Arrests

  • Mylasia Azemer, 20, of South Ozone Park, an employee of K-Mart in Meadowmere, was arrested and charged with passing a Playstation 3 and assorted food to an accomplice without accepting payment for the items on July 7.

Larceny

  • An unidentified subject stole $500 from the cash register at the Getty Station located on Woodmere Boulevard in Woodmere and fled in an unknown direction, a complainant reported to police on July 8.
  • An unidentified subject took a catalytic converter from a vehicle that was parked on Henry Street in Inwood, a complainant reported to police on July 8.
  • Multiple pieces of landscape equipment were removed from a trailer that was parked on Long Beach Road and McCarthy Road in Island Park sometime between July 6 and 7.

DWI

  • Jennifer L. Gonzalez, 24, of Inwood was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated on East Rockaway Road in Hewlett on July 9.
