Former LB Police Commissioner Michael Tangney Dies

The funeral for Michael Tangney, who served for more than four decades in the Long Beach Police Department, will take place on Monday.

LONG BEACH, NY — Michael Tangney rose through the ranks in the Long Beach Police Department. Tangney went from police officer to police commissioner. Tangney, who served for 42 years in the department, has died. He was 66.

The city of Long Beach is mourning Tangney, who ran the police department for eight years.

"He was the architect of several innovative programs that improved the safety of our community and focused on the well-being of the city’s youth," the city said in a statement.

No details were provided about his death.

Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2-9 p.m. at the Christopher T. Jordan Funeral Home in Island Park. Tangney's funeral at Long Beach's St. Ignatius Martyr Church on Monday at 10 a.m.

"He was a husband, father, soon-to-be grandfather, coach, neighbor, friend, and fixture in the Long Beach community," the city added.

In tribute to Tangney, city buildings were being flown at half-staff on Wednesday and on the day of his funeral. Mourning bunting was placed above police headquarters.

Tangney retired from the department in 2020.
