LBPD Help Apprehend Burglary Suspect

Nassau County police put out search and Long Beach detective spotted him.

The Long Beach Police Department assisted in capturing a burglary suspect who was chased through the city's streets, an incident that had some residents concerned as officers knocked on their doors and ran through their yards Friday afternoon.

According to LBPD Commissioner Michael Tangney, the Nassau County Police Department put out a search for a male suspect who was wanted for a burglary somewhere within the jurisdiction of the Fourth Precinct, and a Long Beach officer spotted the suspect on a city street and, after a chase, officers apprehended him.

“One of our detectives was coming back from an assignment, observed the subject on the street and radioed it in and after about 45 minutes we captured him in the backyard of a house on Chester Street,” Tangney said. “We call it a ‘good to go.’ He’s good to be arrested.”

A Long Beach resident told Patch that Tangney had knocked on her front door at about 12:30 p.m. and asked if anyone had run inside. “Then [he] told me there was somebody ‘who could be dangerous’ running through the backyards (in the 200 block between East Market and East Hudson), and that I should keep the dog in and close the doors,” she wrote in an email. “Then a motorcycle officer raced into my backyard, and then quickly out again.”

Police didn't have immediate details about suspect, the charges against him or the location of the burglary Friday afternoon, although Sgt. Eric Cregeen, LBPD’s public information officer, said the suspect had a parole violation.

A county public information officer confirmed the incident in Long Beach: “A couple of jurisdictions were involved and [detectives] will call us later when they are done with their investigation and processing, so we have an idea of what really did transpire.”
