LONG BEACH, NY. — Long Beach High School’s auditorium was transformed into depression-era small-town Ohio this November, as the high school theater company produced Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman's comedy, “The Man Who Came To Dinner.”
The play tells the story of Sheridan Whiteside, a critic, lecturer and radio personality who slips and falls on the doorstep of a house he’s visiting as a dinner guest. Whiteside breaks his hip in the fall, forcing him into six weeks of confinement at the house. In those six weeks, the household is thrown into disarray as the egotistical Whiteside tries to bend everyone in it to his will. All the while, Whiteside is attempting to clandestinely convince his assistant to stay in his employ after she has fallen for a local reporter.
The 49-student production — 35 in the cast, 14 in the stage crew — performed Nov. 20, 21 and 22, under the guidance of faculty members Alexander Austein, who directed, and of Scott Scheinson, who produced. On the student side, student director Sabrina Moy and stage managers Mateo Flores and Tab Freeney took on leadership roles.
