Long Beach Teen Collapses, Dies

Shakur Moore, 16, loses his life while playing basketball at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center.

Shakur Moore, a junior at Long Beach High School, died while he was playing baskeball on Thursday night. Moore, 16, collapsed on the court at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center on Riverside Boulevard and was taken to the Long Beach Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The cause of death is unknown.

In a statement, Dr. Robert Greenberg, superintendent of Long Beach School District, said that the district is “deeply saddened at the loss of one of our high school students … We extend our sympathies and condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time, and our counselors are on hand to help any students and staff with grief brought on by this tragedy.”

A Facebook page was created in memory of Moore, and more than 680 people signed on to it. Patch is working on a fuller story.
