Middle School Boy Remains in Critical Condition

Abdul Bird continues to fight for his life as he remains in critical condition at Cohen Children’s Medical Center at North Shore-LIJ, a full day after the Long Beach Middle School student was struck by an SUV in Lido Beach.

“Abdul is in critical condition,” Michelle Pinto, a spokesperson for the hospital in New Hyde Park, told Patch Wednesday morning. 

The 14-year-old eighth grader was supposed to take part in his school’s graduation ceremony Wednesday, and was on his way to rehearsal yesterday when he was skateboarding on Lido Boulevard at Greenway Road and was hit by a motorist driving a Mercedes-Benz sports utility vehicle at about 7:55 a.m., according to Nassau County Police Department.

After the accident, in which Long Beach firefighter who was driving a city bus spotted the boy lying bloodied in the road and rushed to assist him, Bird was transported to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, where he was listed in critical condition. Later Wednesday, he was transferred to North Shore-LIJ.

In a statement released to the press Tuesday, Superintendent of Long Beach School District, David Weiss, said that the boy suffered “serious head injuries,” and was treated for head trauma at NUMC. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the student and his family and friends; we hope for a full and quick recovery," Weiss said.

The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene and has not been criminally charged, police said.
