Motorist Pulled from Overturned SUV

Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to removed a woman who was trapped in her SUV after it had flipped on the driver's side.

A woman was rescued from her vehicle that overturned at the intersection of West Park Avenue and Washington Boulevard on Oct 8.

During the 4 p.m. hour last Friday, Long Beach firefighters were called to the accident scene — where her Honda SUV had overturned on the driver's side on the sidewalk at the intersection's northeast corner —  and spent approximately 30 minutes trying to extricate the women driver who was trapped inside, according to a pedestrian at the scene.

LBFD firefighters from Heavy Rescue 232 employed the Jaws of Life, a rescue tool, to free the driver and transport her to Long Beach Medical Center.

"The firemen were able to get the driver out of the vehicle and on a stretcher through the rear hatch to a waiting ambulance and to the hospital," said resident Richard Boodman, who was walking about 200 feet to the east of the accident scene when he heard "a very loud bang."

Boodman said that there was a white El Camino with a collapsed wheel parked nearby on West Park Avenue.
