Photo of the Day: Wheels of Fortune

The shopping cart pushers collecting recyclables are a recognizable part of Long Beach's street scenes.

While they’re not part of the Department of Sanitation, some believe they indirectly help keep Long Beach cleaner while also putting some money in their pockets.

They are the women and men who collect empty bottles and push shopping carts full of these recyclables around town, ultimately destined for the local supermarkets where they turn them in for cash. City resident Gloria Febrizio wrote about them in a column for Patch last year, entitled "Wheels of Fortune Keep Spinning in Long Beach." Earlier this spring, Patch crossed paths with the woman featured in today's Photo of the Day while she trekked by City Hall.
