A “Classic” Celebration of Reading in Long Beach

Each year Long Beach’s West School participates in the PTA’s Parents as Reading Partners (PARP) Program. As part of an annual tradition, Principal Sandra Schneider presents a reading challenge to the student body. This year, in a program dubbed “The Classics,” their challenge was to read 100,000 minutes with their parents over the course of four weeks.  If they met this goal, she promised that she and their teachers would dress as some of their favorite classic storybook characters.

Students far surpassed the benchmark, reading over 175,000 minutes, which earned them a gala celebration, hosted by Mrs. Schneider, who dressed as Raggedy Ann. Other classic storybook characters who made special appearances to congratulate the students on their accomplishment were The Cat in the Hat, Lady Bug Girl, Peter Pan, Fancy Nancy, Corduroy, Amelia Bedelia, Madeline, Minnie Mouse, Robin Hood, Snow White, Cinderella and Scooby Doo.
