An 80-person search and rescue unit will begin going door-to-door to check on residents in the West End Thursday.
Their primary mission is to conduct these evaluations for three days or more working from New York Avenue to Nevada Avenue asking residents about their current status.
"We have several people who had to evacuate and assisted with medical needs," said Robery Murray, the task force leader of the company in charge, Pennsylvania Urban Search & Rescue.
According to Murray, one of the engineers was asked to assess the structure soundness of St. Ignatius Church at West Broadway and Grand Boulevard.
The teams will be documenting everything they find and sending the information to Nassau County for assessment. The unit was deployed to Long Island by the State of New York and Federal Government.
"We are basically here to assist with the local jurisdiction with whatever assets and assistance we could provide," Murray said.
There are two doctors already assisting elderly people in nearby homes as Murray spoke to Patch Thursday afternoon.
