Transformer Fire May Have Caused Power Outage in Atlantic Beach

Long Beach Fire Department responded to scene and placed blaze under control.

A transformer fire in Atlantic Beach may have caused the loss of power to about 500 residents, according to fire and power officials.

There was a fire — that is now under control — at either an underground or above ground transformer at Beech Street and Yates Avenue that was actively burning, according toLawrence-Cedarhurst Fire Department Chief Joseph Sperber. The Long Beach Fire Department responded and called LCFD to assist with a pumper truck.

Some 504 out of 2,026 LIPA customers lost power, according to the authority’s website. In Far Rockaway, 274 households are without power, but it’s unclear what the cause is.

LIPA engineers are at the scene in Atlantic Beach assessing the situation, according to a spokesperson.
