Water Main Repaired at East Park-Roosevelt

Springs leak in area with many utilities.

Work to repair a leaky water main at Roosevelt Boulevard and East Park Avenue was completed Tuesday afternoon.

The City of Long Beach discovered the leak to the six-inch main at about 11 a.m. on Sunday. A repair crew shut down the water pressure for about 15 minutes without interrupting service to surrounding homes, and a temporary seal was used to correct the leak, according to Kevin Mulligan, commissioner of Public Works.

"It was a difficult situation because there is also a deep sewer there and only a couple of feet down there is a Verizon utility above us," Mulligan said.

On Tuesday, a Verizon crew check their utility, after which the road where the work was performed was repaired.

Mulligan was unsure when the leak started, but said it could have been a couple of days before the water appeared on the street Sunday.

In 2009, the neighboring sewer main on Roosevelt, between Walnut Street and Olive Street, broke and was repaired, but Mulligan said that the two mains are independent of each other.
