'Amazing' Malverne HS Band Teacher Provides Guidance To Students

MALVERNE, NY — Without community leaders, Malverne wouldn’t hum along nearly as smoothly as it does. We’d miss their contributions in big and small ways.

Patch has partnered with T-Mobile to recognize these often unsung community leaders and celebrate their contributions. This submission comes from Nikki Diaz, who nominated Glen Johnson.

How do you know the community leader? He is the band teacher at Malverne High School.

What does the community leader do? Mr. Johnson is an amazing music leader. He is the director of the Pride of Malverne Marching Band, which consists of over 100 students in grades 9-12. This band has won state championships, marched down Main Street at Disney World, and plays the halftime show at every football game. The students look to Mr. Johnson for guidance and support as they navigate through their music education. He is so much more than a teacher to them and he deserves to be recognized.

Why do you believe the community leader should be recognized or honored? Mr. Johnson should be recognized for the hard work he does year-round. He leads over 100 students in the high school and during marching band season, a lot of that time is done after school, on the weekends, and during summer vacation. His Pride of Malverne Marching Band has won state championships. The amount of hard work and effort that Mr. Johnson puts into his students is a sight to see. The students see him as much more than a teacher. He is someone that they can go to for support and guidance. All teachers work hard, but some go above and beyond and that is Mr. Johnson.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the community hero? Mr. Johnson doesn't always get the recognition that he deserves. People don't see the hard work that he puts in behind the scenes. The Pride of Malverne Marching Band runs smoothly because of his hard work and dedication and it is not always recognized.
